Computing

Our Vision

Computing is an integral part of everyday life and will play a vital role in our children’s futures. At Revoe Learning Academy, we aim to equip every child with the skills, creativity, and enthusiasm to live and thrive in a world increasingly shaped by technology. As computing underpins modern life, it is essential that pupils gain the confidence and ability to navigate a rapidly developing and ever-changing technological landscape.

At Revoe, Computing is taught in dedicated lessons by our specialist teacher, Miss Taylor. The NCCE Teach Computing scheme forms the foundation of our curriculum, but each lesson is carefully tailored to meet the specific needs of our pupils, taking into account our infrastructure and the unique needs of each child. Through these discrete lessons, children gain a deeper understanding of Computing, with knowledge and skills progressing year-on-year to ensure strong, lasting understanding.

The Four Strands of Our Computing Curriculum

Computer Systems and Networks

Children learn how computers and digital devices function independently and when connected to networks such as the internet. They explore:

· The different parts of a computer and their functions

· How information is sent and received between devices

· How networks support communication and share resources

· How to stay safe and make responsible choices online

This strand helps children make sense of the technology they encounter daily and develop the skills to use it safely and effectively.

Programming

Pupils learn to write and test clear instructions for computers, building from simple programs to more complex creations involving variables. They develop:

· Understanding of algorithms - step-by-step instructions

· Problem-solving skills through predicting, testing and debugging code

· Logical thinking, resilience, and perseverance

· Creativity through designing games with scores and timers, animations, and controlling devices such as Crumble Controllers and Micro:bits

Children progress from block-based coding to more advanced tools, preparing them for future digital learning and careers.

Creating Media

Children explore how to create and edit digital content. They learn to:

· Design and produce images, audio, video, and animations

· Use digital media to communicate ideas effectively using a range of software

· Work safely, respectfully, and responsibly online

· Choose appropriate digital tools for specific tasks

This strand fosters digital creativity and builds transferable skills used across the curriculum and in everyday life.

Data and Information

Pupils develop a deep understanding of data and how it is used in the world around them. They learn to:

· Collect, organise, and store data

· Sort and group information to identify patterns

· Present data using charts, tables, and simple databases

· Understand how data informs real-life decisions, from apps to weather reports

This helps children make sense of a data-rich world and teaches them to handle information carefully and responsibly.

Connecting Computing to the Wider Curriculum

Where appropriate, meaningful links are made between Computing and the wider curriculum, particularly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Pupils’ curiosity and technical skills are nurtured through hands-on experiences, including:

· Exploring Lego Robotics

· Programming external devices such as Crumble Controllers and Micro:bits

· Using Data Loggers to collect and analyse information

These experiences are further enhanced during STEM Week, where children engage in immersive science, technology, engineering, and maths-based challenges. Pupils also visit the University of Lancashire to take part in robotics and AI activities, offering real-world insight into cutting-edge technology.

Access to Technology

We are extremely fortunate to have access to an extensive range of technology, with a dedicated Computing Suite and access to individual devices for all Key Stage 2 children, to support learning both in school and at home.

Children in Years 1 and 2, have access to a suite of Chromebooks and our EFYS and SEND unit have access to a range of age-appropriate technology based interactive resources.

Online Safety and Digital Citizenship

We believe it is vital that children understand both the benefits and the potential risks of the online world and know how to keep themselves safe. At Revoe, we support this by providing:

· Regular online safety lessons as part of our Computing curriculum, using the Be Internet Legends scheme and resources from ThinkUKnow, CEOP and many more

· Active participation in Safer Internet Day, reinforcing safe and responsible online behaviour

· Visits and talks from our PCSOs, who help children understand real-world online safety and how to seek help when needed

· Statutory RSHE lessons covering online safety and responsible computing

Children are taught to seek help if they encounter something online that worries them and are familiar with multiple ways to report concerns. We work collaboratively with parents to ensure they are informed and able to support safe technology use at home.
